The Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice quartet performed a selection of jazz standards written by women and non-binary composers at the Medford Jazz Fest 2026.
[Terry Carter]: The jazz field and the roles that jazz play in the larger struggle for gender and I would say social justice. The Institute celebrates contributions women in particular have made in the development of the art form and advocates for more equitable working conditions for all. people pursuing careers in jazz. And we have four of their students, one that's graduating and three that are five years, it's a quartet. So we have Scarlet Before Horses on the keys. Alice Armstrong on trumpet.
All right, we got Greg Tan back there on the big sexy, the bass. And we have, and she's been here before, we have Jillian Upshaw. Jillian Upshaw on the drums, all right. As previously introduced, our mission is we play, we're playing today a collection of standards that are from the New Standards book, which is a collection of tunes that were written by women and non-binary contributors to the jazz music that we believe should be like standard repertoire sometime in the future as it gets played more and more. And our next tune that we're going to be playing is composed by Alice Coltrane and it's called Blue Nile. Thank you.
